Easter is an important holiday in the west. It is held on the first Sunday after the first full moon in spring. Spring begins around March 20th, so that means that Easter can come anytime between the end of March to the middle of April. This year Easter is on April 4th; last year it was on April 12th, and in 2011 it will be on April 24th.
Easter is a Christian holiday. Christians believe that on Easter day, Jesus Christ was resurrected, which means he came alive again, after being dead for three days. Christian churches have special Easter programs to remember Jesus. Many people will buy nice new clothes for Easter Sunday, like people in Taiwan do for Chinese New Year..
Many non-Christians also celebrate some of the fun traditions of Easter. One tradition is that early on Easter morning, the Easter Bunny comes to the houses of good girls and boys and leaves them Easter baskets filled with candy. He also hides colored eggs around the house for the children to find when they wake up on Easter morning. Children also decorate eggs themselves. The eggs are hard-boiled, so later in the day you can eat the eggs.
Easter dinner is one of the most important meals of the year. Like Christmas and Thanksgiving, it is a time for families to gather together and enjoy each other’s company. The traditional food for Easter dinner is ham.
