Be Prepared for Taiwan

Benefits
Teachers will receive the following benefits upon receipt of their resident working visa:
• Medical and dental coverage.  With the payment of a monthly fee, teachers receive a national health insurance card, which entitles them to comprehensive medical and dental coverage.  The school pays for 60% of the insurance card, the government pays for 10%, and the teacher pays the other 30%, which comes to about NT$390/month(US$13). With the card, most visits to a medical or dental facility cost only a nominal registration fee, usually between NT$100-150(US$3 to US$5).  National health insurance, however, does not cover 100% of all kinds of medical care.  It only pays a portion of the total cost of hospital stays, surgeries and some types of prescription medicine.
• Right to operate a motorcycle in Taiwan.  (Refer to safety tips and regulations.)
• Right to use Taiwan banking facilities and services, which entitles one to open interest-bearing accounts and to wire earnings back to one's "home country".

Vacations and Holidays
Schoolhouse has a set schedule of vacations and holidays that is posted at the beginning of each calendar year.  These non-work days are unpaid, as teachers are paid only for the hours they work.  Though vacation dates may change from year to year, the lengths of vacations remain the same.  Approximate lengths of vacations and holidays:
• Summer vacation (2 weeks)
• Christmas vacation (2 weeks)
• Chinese Lunar New Year (1 week)
• National Holidays, such as Double 10 and Mid-Autumn Festival (5 to 7 days, accumulated)
Most teachers at Schoolhouse use their vacations to visit sites on Taiwan or fun nearby countries. Air fares to popular tourist destinations are cheap from Taiwan.  For instance, one can fly round trip to:

Hong Kong for about US$200
The Philippines for about US$300
Thailand for about US$350
Bali, Indonesia for about $400
Shanghai, China for about $450

Air fares are based on rates advertised by Taiwan-based travel agents as of August, 2002.
